We recently visited the Storm King Art Center for the opening reception of Maya Lin’s wonderful new Earthwork, “Storm King Wavefield”.
Maya Lin is best known as the artist who created the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC when she was just 21 years old (!). Amazing.
Ms. Lin has blended the two elements of Earth and Water with this piece. It’s an intriguing notion — the best artwork always involves tension, and in this case I think it stems from the fact that these two elements do not blend easily.
In Feng Shui Earth “controls” Water by absorbing or blocking it.
This is why looking at and exploring this piece doesn’t give you a “settled” feeling. The experience stays with you for a long time after you’ve walked away.
Check out this piece and many more beautiful pieces of outdoor art at Storm King this summer!
