In Feng Shui, the least desirable bed placement is when the foot of your bed is in a direct line with the doorway. In this position you are vulnerable to any sources of energy that may come rushing in the door.
The best Feng Shui position for your bed is the Command Position, where you can easily see the door but don’t face it directly.
But what if that ideal placement is just not possible?
One solution is to add a footboard to your bed, but footboards aren’t always ideal for a number of reasons: they can make you feel trapped, there may not be enough space to add one, or maybe they’re just not your style.
Since the idea is to give yourself a sense of safety and security while yousleep, here are three ways to give yourself good Feng Shui when you’re in bed:
- Shield yourself by placing a chest filled with heavy blankets at the foot of the bed.
- Place a low screen between your bed and the door.
- I especially love Noren curtains or something similar that shield you while providing a partial view of someone approaching.
What do you think? Do you have a sense of security in your bed?

I have exactly this problem with another added. Our room is an ‘L’ shape and the only place for the bed is across from the door. The other problem is the corner of the ‘L’ projects into the room and shoots a poison arrow straight at my husband’s side of the bed.
I moved his dresser perpendicular to the wall to shield from the door and to extend the corner. It works, but I have been thinking that a curtain will do the job better because it is softer and I won’t run into it in the middle of the night! 🙂
Sounds perfect, Christina! L-shaped rooms are very difficult but it sounds like you’re on your way to the “elegant solution” 🙂
Okay, what exactly do you mean by “command position”? The last time we rearranged furniture I put it up against the left wall, so when I walk through the door, it’s to the left of me. Should I move it again?
Hi Emily, thanks for your question. Take a look at this post that’s all about the Command Position. I hope it will make things clearer!
hi, thank you for your web page. my bed faces the door, and really no other option…tiny room, windows on other two walls. if i use a screen at foot of bed, how high do you recommend screen to be and should it go across the width of bed.
if i use a curtain, or mosquito net, is it okay to be a sheer and sit at the foot of the bed?
Hi,
I have the exact issue with my bedroom. Has this been answered yet?
Yes it has 🙂 Please see above.
What if if there is no space? Im living in a dormitory and we have no enough space for a cabinet or any other furniture that blocks the door to the bed. What will I do? Thank you!
Hello Tonet,
Yes, this is a difficult situation for sure. Another solution is to hang a crystal or small windchime from the ceiling between you and the doorway. The crystal will help to absorb negative Chi energy that enters the room when the door is open. Keep the door closed as much as possible too, while making sure that the interior of your room feels welcoming to positive Chi.
How do I protect myself from my bed facing a three door mirror. There’s no other way to arrange my bedroom. Plus the bed faces the door, and its under a window.?
Hello Sharon,
This is a complex question(s) which I can answer much more easily by seeing photos and a sketch of the layout of the room. Please use my Ask Ann page to forward your materials.
Can anyone please tell me if I can re-range my room with the end of my bed facing the door. I have a very odd shaped room and I dont like how my room set up has been for the last couple of months. My bed is facing the window but the point of it was to see to water views when I wake up and I dont see them and I would like to change my room to wear the end of the bed is facing the door because then the side of the bed will see the water views and water always make me calm whenever I see it. Does anyone have any advice for me? If so Id love to hear your advice and please be truthfully because I want honest opinions. Thankyou x
Hello Monique,
Yes, you can absolutely face your bed in whichever direction makes you feel most comfortable. Just be sure that to protect yourself from incoming Chi energy, as described in this article.
