Bad Feng Shui: A Room Set Up For Conflict

What do you think of this room?

Feng Shui's Five Elements: on a collision course.

I thought it was livable myself until I realized that it’s set up for conflict, because two of Feng Shui’s Five Elements are on a collision course.

The Wood in the furniture doesn’t stand a chance against all that Metal, forcefully represented in the white paint, upholstery and flooring.

Metal and Wood clash because in Feng Shui, the sharpness of Metal “controls” Wood by cutting it back and limiting its growth.

And in this case there’s another problem: the open hearth. The flames make it seem as if the room could go up in flames at any moment!

How can Feng Shui bring elemental balance to this dessicated scene?

The Water element’s rich, dark colors in artwork and accessories, and the Earth element with a few strategically-placed ceramic tiles, would go a long way towards making the room feel safer and more comfortable.

And a screen around the hearth would help too. ;)

Do you agree? What changes would you make?

I agree. Plus with all that dead wood, wouldn’t live plants be helpful? Too many “pointed arrows” and linear forces. The room needs some curves (and color) for balance.

    Nice post, Ann.

Yes, you’re right — plants would be great in this space, especially with rounded leaves to bring in a more lush feeling. It definitely needs some curves!!

I was going to say PLANTS too. The room looks dead. The chairs also sit very low. There’s no soul there. We need texture, art, color!
