There’s a raging controversy in some blog forums about what Feng Shui has to say about plants in the bedroom (I didn’t realize how heated such a topic could become!).
So, a few points that I hope will calm the waters and bring reason to the table 😉
Feng Shui generally frowns upon plants in a bedroom because they so frequently “take over” the room.
Here’s a great example:
The aggressive growth of the fern pushes against Feng Shui’s goal of creating a serene space where you can relax and sleep. You should never feel intimidated by your belongings!
The same goes for an excessive number of plants, which can easily turn into a form of clutter, symbolically filling space that might better serve you if it were open and free.
- Some say plants can actually be dangerous because they take up oxygen during the night. I have yet to be convinced by the science on this score.
But don’t forget one of Feng Shui’s lesser-known tenets: If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It.
If you have plants in your bedroom and life feels great — you sleep well at night, your relationships are happy and healthy, etc. — there’s no reason to remove your plants from a Feng Shui standpoint!
But if you feel that better Feng Shui might help, remove the plants and see what happens.
I’ve seen it make a positive difference many times, and it just might do the same for you.

I like this Ann on plants in the bedrooms and agree with your comments entirely. Though, we have an understanding that one plant of a modest size in the bedroom does more good than harm, by way of cleansing the air from any EMF and adding grace to the environment.
Again like you have rightly said ‘no need to rock the boat if the sailing is smooth’.

Thank you for your valuable insights, Aroon, as always!
I think all rooms benefit from the presence of at least one plant because they add that touch of green that we need to feel connected with the out of doors. It’s a way to bring the outdoors inside.
Hi Debbie, Thanks for your comment. Feng Shui loves for nature to be brought indoors as well, but in the bedroom there are many exceptions. However if you are sleeping well at night and your life is working the way you wish it to, there is no need to make any changes.
Hi Ann,
Thank you for sharing this information. I think you’ve covered great points on this issue that do help clear dome doubts. I agree that the plants can be good or bad depending on their size and number. I’d definitely add a small plant (to a bedroom) that would help clean the air. There is more air pollution inside the home than outside so plants help a lot if we pick the right ones. 🙂 It all depends on the specific situation I think.
With that said, I did find the title of this article a little misleading at least for me. When I read the title I thought that I was going to read an article about why Feng Shui does not allow plants in the bedroom, ever, at all. It sounded like more of a negative title. But as I read I realized it’s not like that at all which is great! 🙂
Thanks again!
Nigaya
Hi Nigaya,
I am so happy you have understood the importance of plants for cleansing the environment. However, Feng Shui recommends placements of elements in certain areas to be used as primary cures, secondary cures or never.
This is very important. For example a water feature can be in water area or, wood area but never in fire area. This you will pick up from Feng Shui books.
All the best
Aroon
Thank you Nigaya. As the article says, essentially, don’t rock the boat if your life is going the way you wish it to. However, when there are difficulties or you are experiencing negative energy in your life, adhering more strictly to Feng Shui guidelines is often exactly what is needed to bring things back into balance. I’m so glad you found the article to be positive, after all ;))
Take up oxygen?? Do your homework, missy. Plants generate oxygen!! That’s basic high school biology class. Sheesh.
Hello allycatadventures, in the post I do not endorse the view that plants “take up” oxygen, but thanks anyway for your comment. You seem interested in Feng Shui – I hope it brings a sense of harmony into your life.
