Feng Shui: Know Your Numbers!

Did you know that your date of birth associates you with one of the numbers 1-9 in Feng Shui?

Along with every other aspect of Feng Shui, the meaning and symbolism of the numbers 1-9 on the Bagua Map has developed over thousands of years, with implications for your life and personality.

Here is how the numbers fall on the Bagua:

The irregular-looking pattern is called a “Magic Square” because of the connections between the positions of the numbers and the sense of wholeness within the square.

And when you add the numbers in any direction, they always add up to 15.

The Lo Shu “Magic” Square is in perfect balance.

The symbolism of the numbers accords with its meaning on the Bagua Map.

Number 1: Life Journey/Career – The Water element, moving or still.
Number 2: Relationship & Marriage – Soft Earth, like a fertile planting field.
Number 3: Family & New Beginnings – strong, sturdy Wood
Number 4: Wealth & Fortunate Blessings – young, flexible Wood

Number 5: Physical, Mental & Emotional Health – Earth in the Center

Number 6: Travel & Helpful People – Hard Metal, like a knife
Number 7: Children, Joy & Productivity – Soft Metal, like gold leaf
Number 8: Knowledge & Self-Cultivation – Hard Earth, like an ancient mountain.
Number 9: Fame & Reputation, Illumination — The Fire element.

For example the number 1 is associated with Water at the bottom of the Bagua, symbolizing energy as it begins its journey into your space, while the cycle culminates with the powerful number 9 and Water’s opposite, Fire, at the top of the Map.

Your date of birth dictates which number you are associated with so by looking at how the numbers fall you can begin to understand what “your” number means in your life.

You know, it’s so tricky – it seems every feng shui expert associates a different set of numbers with areas (I just read a book of a 20-year practitioner who associates health with 9 instead of 5 like you have it here, and helpful people with 5 instead of 6, wealth with 8 instead of 4 (which I thought in Chinese was supposed to be a “death” number anyway)). Another famous & successful NYC practitioner uses a different number association arrangement still.

Since all of you are professionals — it would never occur to me to doubt the expertise of any of you — how are we mere layfolks to know which system to use?

      Hello, M,
The number system I work with is associated with the most ancient meanings of the I Ching, the ancient Chinese book of philosophy. Please take a look at the books on this topic, such as The Numerology of the I Ching, by Alfred Huang, for more clarification on the way these marvelous numbers work together.
Thanks for your comment! I appreciate you asking me this interesting question.
