Desk Directly Facing a Window: An Office Feng Shui Mistake!

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice that promotes harmony and balance in one's environment. One key aspect of Feng Shui is the placement of furniture. In this article, we will specifically talk about desks and how it is unpreferable to keep the desk facing a window.

Many of us prefer to setup our desk to face the window because it gives us a beautiful view of the outside. Our rationale is that it can help us relax and de-stress during our workday.

HOWEVER, the opposite is true. Desks that directly faces the window without any gap in between is considered bad Feng Shui.

With that setup, our focus gets distracted by what's happening outside, and we feel anxious by what's happening behind us (if you don't have a wall behind your back). Moreover, a desk facing a window with no window locks can also signify a lack of security and stability in the workplace, leading to further distractions and an unsettled state of mind.Creating a comfortable and conducive working space is also paramount in enhancing the educational process. A well-organized and harmonious environment and the help of Essays.Edubirdie.com with your assignment positively influence concentration, creativity, and overall productivity

Those are the main reasons why a desk that's directly facing window is bad Feng Shui. Here's a more in-depth explanation.

What Makes The Desk Facing The Window Bad?

There are a few drawbacks if you keep your desk facing the window. A few of them include:

Losing Chi Energy

Chi is the universal life force energy that flows through all things. By aligning your desk with the window, the Chi energy escapes outside instead of the other way around. Losing good energy during important work is the last thing anyone wants!

Visual Distractions

A window view and what's happening outside is more engaging than work, which is why it is a big distraction from your work at hand.

While working on your work, the last thing you would want is to get distracted by counting the number of people walking on the ground. Keeping yourself from getting distracted requires energy. Why do you have to invest your limited energy in saving yourself from distraction when you can simply move your desk to a less distracting environment?

Noise Distractions

A desk-facing window may not be your best option if you live in an area with traffic or other noise. The noise from outside can be distracting and make it difficult to concentrate on your work. Instead, try to keep your working space away from the noisy source so you can focus more on being productive on the job rather than getting disturbed by the honks of a car.

Less Productivity

While a desk-facing window can help to somewhat increase your creativity, it can also lead to less productivity. When the good Chi energy escapes from the window, the individual may feel less productive and less motivated to complete their work. If you want to be highly productive, you may want to consider a desk that faces away from the window.

Losing Business Opportunities

Even worse, a desk that is directly facing the window can cause you to miss out on potential business opportunities. If your back is facing the door, it signifies turning your back to the door, symbolizing that you're turning your back to good business Chi , unaware when good business are coming at you.

Things to Consider If You MUST Keep the Desk Facing the Window.

Sometimes, we don’t have enough options to apply all the Feng Shui techniques. Even if you have to keep the desk facing the window, here are a few tips for you to make the most out of this situation

Install Curtains to Block the Distracting Light

Curtains can block the blinding sunlight and even help prevent the Chi energy from escaping through the window.

Use A Lamp to Make Up for The Loss of Light

The last thing anyone would want is complete darkness when writing something in their notebook. To make up for blocking the distracting light, you can use a lamp to enlighten the area and improve your concentration and overall productivity.

Ensure Windows Are at The Side Instead of In the Front

The next best possible position would be your desk facing the wall (not directly against it) and the window at the side. In this room layout, although there might be glare, sunlight won’t directly shine into your eyes, making you unable to work!

How to Follow Feng Shui for A Desk Facing A Window?

To make it easier, I have explained this concept in a step-by-step procedure so you can make the most out of it!

Step 1. Select the Command Position

Make sure that your desk is placed in the "command position." Command position means you can see the door while sitting at your desk, but the door is not in line with your body. This is where you have the greatest visual control of your space, which puts you in charge of your life and of course, your business. Furthermore, it helps you welcome future opportunities coming through your door instead of turning your back on them.

Step 2. Use a Rectangular or Square Desk

The shape of your desk is also crucial in Feng Shui. Rectangular and square desks are said to be the best shapes because they represent stability. Now, it is up to you whether to go for the rectangular or the squared one.

Step 3. Place Your Desk So Your Back is Against a Solid Wall

Feng Shui dictates that you should not place your desk in front of a window. Instead, you should put your desk where you can be seated with your back against a solid wall. This placement will give you a feeling of stability and support.

Step 4. Keep Your Desk Clutter-Free

A cluttered desk doesn’t only look messy but also creates a feeling of chaos. To promote harmony in your environment, ensure to keep your desk clean and organized.

Step 5. Use symbols of Wealth and Prosperity

Place symbols of these things on your desk to attract wealth and prosperity. Some examples include a money plant, a lucky coin, or a waterfall picture. However, these symbols vary depending on the religion you belong to.

Step 6. Use the Color Red

Once you are done with the symbols, it is time to use red color if you haven’t used any. It is said that the color red is associated with wealth and prosperity. You can add a red pen holder or a red paperweight to your desk to attract the energy of wealth and prosperity into your desk space.

Step 7. Keep Your Desk Organized

You can’t put all the stuff randomly on your desk. An organized desk will help you to feel more in control of your life. Make sure to place items you frequently use within easy reach and store items you don't often use in drawers or cabinets.

Step 8. Add Some Personal Flair

Add some personal touches to create a desk that truly reflects your personality. It could include photos of loved ones, artwork, or anything else that makes you happy. You can also decorate the desk on its borders with decorations or even lights!

How does the command position get affected by computer monitors? My monitors are big enough I can’t see over them making the desk face the door, but I’m not able to see anything or anyone coming in.
