I’ve just moved house, to a wonderful new apartment with one distinct disadvantage: very limited storage space.
Moving means decisions. Which pieces of furniture would make the cut? Should we take anything from our garden since we don’t have one anymore? And what about that third set of china we’ve never used?
But one of the most wrenching decisions I needed to make?
What to do with my old Morning Pages, which I’d been fortunate to have stored in the basement of my old building.
I’ve been writing Morning Pages for 18 years now, since 1995, so the Pages do build up!
About five years ago I decided to let go of Pages from the early years. This decision helped me to:
- Let go of toxicity. The years 1995-2001 were painful and difficult for me. During these years I discovered Feng Shui and began the process of change, but keeping Morning Pages from those years had begun to feel like I was hanging on to “old baggage”.
- Acknowledge my new life. During 2002-2003 I met and married my husband Mark. It felt respectful to this new and happy life situation to let go of past events that I was glad to leave behind.
- Make room for the new. In Feng Shui we try to let go of things that are unneeded or unused, making space for new life opportunities and fresh Chi energy. Letting go of the old Morning Pages was a great a way to make room for my new life.
I didn’t let go of everything from those early years. Instead I decided to keep a few pages from each year, as a faraway reminder….
And then I kept writing. The Pages kept building and building into the 12-year stack you see above.
But now? Moving to a smaller apartment with 3+ boxes of Morning Pages, and counting? We just don’t have the space anymore.
I started the same routine I’d followed the first time around, keeping a few pages from each year, but the process has been much more difficult than I expected since I’ve had reason to chronicle so many major life events.
These years have seen the deaths of both of my parents and other loved ones, marrying Mark and starting our life together, launching my Feng Shui career, and renovating our space with Feng Shui with tremendous success. And more, of course 🙂
Before we moved last week I made a valiant start, keeping the Pages around key events and letting go of the rest. I have just one box to go — wish me luck as I keep at it!
