Use these relationships to your advantage to boost your chances of happiness and success in every part of your life. Here are a few examples of how these connections work:

Example #1: Travel & Helpful People supports Wealth & Abundance. These two sectors are diagonally across from one another on the Map (lower right to upper left).

• The easiest way to generate wealth and abundance is with the help and support of other people.  And when you’re helpful to others you are much more likely to create financial and personal success.
• The inverse is also true: the more you travel and meet interesting people, the richer your life becomes.

Example #2: Self-Knowledge nourishes happy Intimate Relationships. These sectors are also diagonally related, lower left to upper right on the Bagua).

• The better you know yourself, the healthier the relationship you’ll attract.
• Intimate relationships help us know ourselves better than we could ever hope to otherwise: sometimes a scary prospect as you’re getting to know a new romantic partner!

Example #3: Your Career and Life Journey are intimately connected with your Reputation in the world. These sectors connect vertically, bottom center to top center of the Map.

• As you travel along in the journey of life, you shape the way the world sees you with every action. 
• The importance of your reputation comes into focus perhaps most clearly when you are attempting to advance your career in a job search!

One key to making these relationships work in your favor is to keep the Center area of the Bagua clear and open, which facilitates the communication and connections between the Bagua areas.

Irma writes,
“I just moved into a new home and am having difficulty with the bedroom doors. They are kitty corner into the rooms.

“How do I place the Bagua and determine where each part of it goes in this particular case?”

Here’s an example of a floor plan with angled bedroom doors:

You can see that the two smaller bedrooms on the right have angled doorways where it is not immediately clear which wall you might use to orient the Bagua Map.

In these kinds of situations the role of intuition comes into play in Feng Shui.

Here is how I answered Irma’s great question:

“Hi Irma,
“There is no absolute way to know the correct answer only by looking at the floor plan. 

“In my consulting rounds I stand in the doorway in order to let my intuition tell me which corner “feels” more like the far left corner — the Wealth sector of the Bagua.  After I determine this the rest of the Bagua falls into place.  

“So this is what I suggest you do for each bedroom in your home.  One way of positioning the Bagua will always feel more correct than the other.“

Since fountains activate the Water element, they are best placed in three specific areas on the Bagua Map in order to nourish the Chi and avoid a clash of energies.

Water represents the Career/Life Journey sector, while it nourishes the Wood element in the New Beginnings/Family and Wealth/Abundance sectors.

Let’s look at the impact of a fountain in each of these areas.

1. A fountain in the Career/Life Journey sector:
This is the only Bagua area that’s associated with the Water element, so placing a fountain here powerfully strengthens your intention about the direction of your career or the journey of your life. 

The moving water brings a sense of activity to the sector, signifying your intention for “smooth sailing” as you move your life forward.

2. A fountain in the New Beginnings/Family sector:
The Wood element – sturdy, mature wood – represents this area, which is all about putting down roots and drawing strength from them. 

Placing your Water fountain here nourishes your intention when your goal is to commence successfully on a new project, or wish to strengthen or heal family relationships.

3. A fountain in the Wealth/Abundance sector:
This area is also associated with Wood – flexible young wood in this case, such as new plants and waving grasses. 

It’s said that as the wind wafts through these young plants they gather abundance into your life.  Place a water fountain here to nourish your abundance and enhance your sense of gratitude for your blessings.

A missing piece.

The most important place to apply the Bagua Map is on the overall floor plan of your home, but your home may be missing one or more Bagua areas.

When your home has an irregular or non-rectangular shape, Feng Shui adjustments are necessary because your body senses that something is missing. 

Without these adjustments, over time you unconsciously and fruitlessly try to create harmony in ways that ultimately have the effect of throwing you even more out of balance.

One of the best ways to make up for a missing area and reinforce your Intention is to apply the Bagua to individual rooms.

Here’s why:

• Most rooms have regular shapes that include all nine Bagua areas, giving you the opportunity to enhance areas that are missing elsewhere and bring a sense of balance back into your life.
• Using the Bagua to look at individual rooms brings focus to life sectors you’ve identified as particularly important to you right now.
• Placing the Bagua on each room shows you where your “double strengths” are, where a Bagua area in the room exactly overlaps that of your home.

To place the the Bagua on an individual room, align the bottom of the Map with its doorway, just as you have done with your home.  If there’s more than one entry to the room, use the door that gets the most traffic.

Begin simply, by applying the Bagua to key rooms like your living room and bedroom. 

Once you have placed appropriate Feng Shui adjustments, let them take effect.  Step back and let the energy flow in its new pattern for at least a few days before making further adjustments.

In this post we’ll examine Feng Shui adjustments to make inside your home to compensate for missing areas.

Missing Bagua areas matter because they signify a missing piece of your life.

Your goal is to create a complete shape for the Bagua map — and thus bring a sense of wholeness to your life.

Here is a floor plan with a few missing areas, and suggested ways to make adjustments that create positive Feng Shui.

• “Extend the view” from adjacent rooms, either by hanging a mirror on the wall that abuts the missing area, or by placing a super-shiny object there to attract light and energy to the missing space.

• Hang art with depth on adjacent walls. You can also extend a view by hanging artwork with visual depth on the wall adjacent to the missing area.  I’ve seen this work well with landscapes and abstract art, which attract the eye and take it into the distance.

• Activate the missing area’s energy in nearby Bagua areas.  For example, if your Career area is missing (as mine is in my apartment), compensate by placing that area’s enhancements near to where the area should be.  In my case, I’ve placed a water fountain (affiliate link) and small rug there to activate my Feng Shui career!

• Enhance the missing areas in individual rooms. It’s always important to enhance missing areas in the individual rooms of your home.  Stand in the doorway of key rooms like your living room and bedroom to identify the areas of the Bagua.  Now you can easily activate and anchor any areas that may be missing elsewhere in your home.

Is the Center of your home open, or is it “occupied”

The condition of the Center of your home’s Bagua affects your health as well as your ability to live a life of joy and satisfaction, every single day.

How important is the Center in Feng Shui?

- The Center represents your Health: physical, emotional and spiritual.

- The Center is associated with the nurturing Earth element. Earth provides you with the firm foundation and nourishing strength you need to live a fulfilling life.

- The Center is the Tai Chi, where Yin & Yang conduct their eternal dance of balance and flow.

- The Center provides stability that connects the Bagua areas to one another.

Creating A Clear Center
It is key to good Feng Shui that the Center of your home be open and clear. This allows Chi energy to flow freely and connect all the other Bagua areas to one another.

If there is an impediment to good Chi flow in the Center of your home such as a staircase, bathroom or other busy space,  create as much grounded energy as you can there with the Earth Element — square shapes, earthy colors such as yellow and tan, or objects made from the earth: ceramic tiles, for example.

Create a Center where Chi feels stable, so it can successfully nourish the rest of your home.

In the circle of the Bagua the beautiful harvest season is represented by the Children & Productivity sector, located in the middle right-hand part of your space.

Take stock, smile and appreciate what you’ve produced from seeds you planted in the spring (the time of New Beginnings).

Each trigram consists of a different three-line combination of solid (Yang) lines and broken (Yin) lines, symbolizing the ever-changing relationship of the essential life forces, Yin and Yang. The Map’s center is symbolized by the familiar Yin/Yang symbol, connecting all the areas to one another.

This symbolism is drawn from the I Ching, the ancient Chinese “Book of Changes” — and of course what is Feng Shui all about but creating positive changes in your life?

I hope the descriptions below add to your enjoyment of Feng Shui, as well as giving you additional insight about its wonderful ways.

Family & New Beginnings: This trigram is two broken (Yin) lines stacked on top of a solid (Yang) line. It symbolizes Thunder – the solid line is ready to “break through” the broken lines above it, shaking things up and causing “New Beginnings” to occur in your life.

Prosperity: This trigram’s two Yang lines over one Yin line symbolize a gentle, gathering Wind. It’s about how the wind gathers prosperity to you and then disperses it throughout your life.

Fame & Reputation: The broken line in between the solid line symbolizes Fire, illuminating your path and radiating your reputation out into the world.

Marriage & Relationship: The three broken (Yin) lines here create the most feminine, area on the Bagua, which makes sense: its meaning is Mother Earth. In this sector you nourish your most intimate relationships, just as a nurturing, supportive Mother would do.

Children & Productivity: Here we have a Yin line on top of two Yang lines, resembling the trigram’s literal meaning, Lake. A symbol of childlike joy, a Lake leads to delight because without this source of water, the all-important rice harvest would not have been possible in ancient China.

Travel & Helpful People: The three Yang lines here mean Heaven – the creative power of the universe. This sector is important because it’s considered the initiating force for all your activities in the world.

Life Journey & Career: This trigram, a solid line between two broken lines, means Water. It even looks a bit like a stream of water, doesn’t it? As you look at the Bagua you’ll see that this area is always close to the entrance to your home or office, where Chi energy flows in like a continuously nourishing stream of water.

Knowledge: Finally, this trigram — a Yang line atop two Yin lines — symbolizes (and resembles) the Mountain on the Bagua map. The stillness you experience at the foot of the mountain helps you to rest and open your mind to the understanding you need to proceed further in life.

Feng Shui offers several ways to compensate for the missing sector, activating your Wealth energy and anchoring your intentions for abundance.

Let’s look at three key ways you can do this right away.

1. Complete the shape of the Bagua by going outside of your space.

For example, activating items such as a bright light or lively flag placed in the correct position completes the Bagua shape here, lifting the energy of this important Bagua area.

2. Activate Wealth energy within the individual rooms in your space. Lay the Bagua Map over the floorplans for the rooms in your home or office to locate all of the Wealth areas in your environment, and activate them with appropriate enhancements.

3. Focus on the Travel & Helpful People sector. The diagonal relationships on the Bagua Map provide strong support for one another, so to activate Wealth & Prosperity, enhance its diagonal opposite, the Travel & Helpful People sector.

In addition to enhancing this area, you’ll need to apply your intention by getting out in the world (traveling) to meet the people who can best support your intentions for abundance (helpful people)!

Each of these three actions gives you a powerful way to enhance your Abundance, even if the area is physically missing in your environment.
