Try these Feng Shui adjustments to calm things down and create an atmosphere that fosters cooperation.

A question came in from Sarah a few days ago about Feng Shui tips for reducing conflict at home between young children.

Try these Feng Shui adjustments to calm things down and create an atmosphere that fosters cooperation.

1. Cool down a Yang environment. Bright colors and an overly busy playspace can encourage aggressive behavior.

Try painting the walls with soft Yin colors like pale blues and greens.

Clear out any toys that aren’t currently being enjoyed by the children.

Avoid bright overhead lights, which can feel oppressive, filling in the room with floor and table lamps that create soft pools of light for focused play.

2. Enhance the appropriate areas of the Bagua: Children and Family.

The Children area is located in the middle of the right hand side of your home or the children’s playroom. Enhance it with your kids’ artwork or other projects they’re working on.

The Family area is exactly opposite on the left hand side of your space. A great enhancement for this area is happy family photos that remind the kids of their most important support network

3. Empower each child with his or her own designated area, creating a sense of ownership and boundaries.

What have I missed? Let me — and Sarah! — know in the Comments.

It’s a given that headboards on beds are good Feng Shui, but Heather is curious:

Do footboards on beds affect the Feng Shui of the bedroom?

Feng Shui-wise, here are two sides to the footboard coin.

On the downside, footboards can make you feel as though you’re trapped, and they can block your view of the door at certain angles, preventing you from having visual command of your space.

Over time the limitations of a footboard can make you feel as though your entire life is constrained: bad Feng Shui indeed.

And I personally don’t like footboards because I’m tall: it feels like I can never fully stretch out.

But footboards create good bedroom Feng Shui in a couple of specific situations as well.

If your bed can only be positioned directly facing the door, rather than in the Command Position that Feng Shui recommends, a footboard will blunt the force of Chi energy coming through the door straight at you, and cause it to flow around you instead.

And kids prefer footboards, too, because they add to the child’s feeling of safety and security during the night.

Does your bed have a footboard? How does it make you feel?

Here’s some Bad Feng Shui in a model home I recently visited, with the child’s room set up like so:

It's crowded in here! (click to enlarge)

This room is packed with animals of every shape and description.

I count twelve stuffed animals (I might have missed a few), plus painted animals on furniture and wall hangings, animals in the curtains and bed linens, and animal prints on the easy chair!

The giant giraffe alone is nightmarish.

Don’t get me wrong, stuffed animals are wonderful companions. But in Feng Shui it’s key that a child’s room feel calm and safe, private and roomy.

This room has so much going on it that the child himself may get lost.

In Feng Shui animals represent the Fire element, the most Yang element of all, so from a Feng Shui and Five Elements perspective, this room is way out of balance.

I’d suggest asking this child to choose a few favorite animal friends and sending the rest to bring vitality to other childrens’ rooms.

Here are some color recommendations for kids’ bedrooms that I found recently in a major magazine.
From a Feng Shui perspective none of these colors belong in a child’s bedroom.
These are all “Yang” colors — great for rooms where a… read more »

You May Also Like:

Bad & Good Feng Shui for Children: Bedroom Colors

More Bad Feng Shui For Kids’ Bedrooms

Good Feng Shui For Kids Who Aren’t Getting Along

Are Dark Colors Bad Bedroom Feng Shui?

Video: Feng Shui For Your Child’s Bedroom

Here are some color recommendations for kids’ bedrooms that I found recently in a major magazine.

From a Feng Shui perspective none of these colors belong in a child’s bedroom.

Feng Shui does not approve.

These are all “Yang” colors — great for rooms where a lot of activity takes place, like a playroom, perhaps, but definitely not a bedroom.

A child’s bedroom needs to feel like a sanctuary from the busy world: safe, secure and quiet. Choose “Yin” colors for your child’s bedroom that will help him or her calm down and sleep well.
