Elevate Your First Home: Discovering Architectural Styles with Feng Shui Guidance

Having your own first home is one of the best joys in life one could achieve, but planning for its design is another hurdle you should leap. When choosing what type of design you want in your first home, practicing feng shui can give you some great ideas.

Feng Shui, pronounced as fung shway, is the ancient Chinese practice of arranging objects intentionally to improve energy flow by creating balance and harmony to make your life at home peaceful. This practice believes there is a connection between interior design and a human's fortune, prosperity, and well-being.

Even though this is an ancient Chinese practice, this is also popular in Western countries as many Westerners practice this also. The feng shui method provides balance, harmony, and architectural styles you can apply in your first home. Basic architecture offers excellent benefits, especially when using innovative products such as Babcock-Davis BNP Architectural Access Door, and combining it with feng shui adds another set of great benefits!

Architectural Style with Feng Shui

The architectural style of feng shui involves the intentional placement of the house itself, the furniture, and the paint finish used. A London architect can assist in crafting your home's architectural aesthetics and style. Here's a list of feng shui architectural styles you can apply:

Architectural Style #1: South-Facing Front Door

The positioning of your front door is a critical factor in feng shui as it sees this door as the mouth of your house relates to energy absorption into it. The best position for the door is south facing, which is suitable for natural light, warmth, and chi absorption. The door's color will also matter; for south-facing doors that represent fame and reputation, it's best to use yellow, purple, red, or fiery yellow.

Architectural Style #2: A Clean Front Porch

Since the door is the mouth of your home for energy or qi absorption, you must remove any obstructions, such as pillars or trees, to welcome the positive energy in your house. When removing these obstructions, leave no trace of them to experience a harmonious entry of energy into your home. A clear front porch is also suitable for welcoming visitors or guests for a hassle-free entrance to your humble abode.

Architectural Style #3: Feng Shui in the Garden

What is essential in a garden with feng shui is not its size of it but its layout, arrangement, and design. In incorporating feng shui in your garden, apply curving or curvy pathways to provide a harmonious flow of energy, not sharp points, and corners promoting negative energy. Using curves in your garden also extends to other things, such as fences and flower beds.

The northeastern part of the garden represents personal growth, so it's best to put the earth in that area, such as a zen garden. For water features, put them in the south and southeastern region. Adding a wind chime also helps with its relaxing sound effect.

Architecture Style #4: Landscape Elements You Can Add

The arrangements and positioning are vital factors in architectural design with feng shui. Here is a list of areas outside of your house and the appropriate landscape element in it according to feng shui:

  • Northern Area:

The northern part is associated with career growth. You can put elements that are of colors blue and black. A mini-fountain or a bird bath are perfect examples. On the other hand, the Northeastern area relates to your knowledge and spiritual growth, so apply here pleasing to the eye, such as the garden. The northwestern area is associated with traveling and meeting new people. A guest area fits in this part of your house.
  • Western Area:

This area promotes creativity, perfect for children and students. Making a study area is an excellent choice to put here to enhance and master their creative juices.
  • Eastern Area:

The eastern part of your house is crucial as it represents health and longevity. The perfect element to apply here is ornamental trees which represent life.
  • Southern Area:

This area relates to fire which means putting an external kitchen or BBQ grill there is a perfect match. The southeastern area represents wealth, and the perfect colors for this area are purple and gold. For the southwestern area, it means love and relationships. Apply elements there that possess the colors pink, red, and yellow.

Architecture Style #5: The Command Position

The command position in feng shui means the part of anything in your house that allows you to see most of the entrances of every room. This kind of positioning is for you to enhance your sense of safety and security by seeing what or who will come to the door. Placing your sofa or chairs in the command position, you'll feel safe and secure.

Examples of Architerucal Style with Feng Shui

Countries all over the world practice feng shui for their architectural design. Here are some known buildings around the world that practice this type of architecture:

  • The Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong by Architect I.M. Pei and Partners:

The initial feng shui design of this 72-floor skyscraper in Hong Kong faced a lot of controversies and flak from feng shui experts with its design with knife-like sharp edges and "X" marks. Architect I.M. Pei accepted this negative feedback and modified the initial setup by making the "X" marks less noticeable but still keeping the sharp edges.
  • Cheung Kong Centre in Hong Kong by Architect Cesar Pello:

This 68-story skyscraper almost received criticism along with its neighbors, The Bank of China Tower and The HSBC Building. Architect Pello's final design was square-shaped with a reflective glass facade to allow energy to circulate in the center and reflect the negative energy away from the skyscraper.
  • The HSBC Building in Hong Kong by Architect Norman Foster and Partners:

This third skyscraper received criticism for its cannon-like cranes directly facing the tower. But this building contains excellent feng shui, according to feng shui experts; one reason is that it faces the harbor with water representing wealth and prosperity.
  • The Apple Store in London by Architect Norman Foster and Partners:

As mentioned above, other countries also practice feng shui other than China. This Apple store, located in Regent Street, London, stands in a good spot for energy absorption, and the ground floor has trees with no obstructions for a harmonious flow of energy inside the store.

Final Thoughts

Now that you have your own home, it's up to you what style you would follow for its overall design. Practicing feng shui in designing or decorating your home is a good choice as it provides aesthetics and good fortune, an excellent combination to elevate your new home!
