You know all about why a TV doesn’t belong in your bedroom, but happily there are ways to set up a television in your home so it actually has good Feng Shui.
Here are my Top-5 Tips for creating a harmonious TV-viewing experience with Feng Shui:
- Place the TV at a comfortable viewing height. Hanging the TV above the fireplace is a no-no in Feng Shui for two reasons: it puts you in an uncomfortable viewing position, and its electricity creates excess heat in combination with the “Fire-y” symbolism of the hearth.
- Your comfort is priority #1 in Feng Shui, so get a TV whose size allows you to sit comfortably while you watch. One that’s too small forces you to strain to see it, whereas an overly-large unit forces you to sit as far away from it as you can get. Get a TV that’s “just right” for the dimensions of your space.
- Arrange your furniture so that you, and not the TV, are “in command” of the room. Place your couch or easy chair in the Command Position across from the door where you have the greatest visual control of the room, and position the TV across from it in a less-dominant position.
- Paint your walls in rich dark tones to help the television blend in to its surroundings and absorb some of the Chi energy from the bright TV picture.
- Finally, nourish your TV-watching social life by keeping the room organized and inviting. A clutter-free room gives your TV watching experience the best possible Feng Shui.

This is really tough to do with an ‘open concept’ floor plan. How does one compensate?
Hi Kerrin, Thanks for writing with this great question. Can you please give me some more details? I’d love to give you as clear an answer as possible 😉
I have a rather large Great Room (30’x30′). Without having our things spread far out across this space, we have ‘separated’ this Great Room into a sitting area with piano up front, the TV area in back left, with kitchen and dining to far right. My ‘Command position’ is in the far left corner (Incidentally, that is where our TV currently is). Not sure how to change this without moving TV and sitting areas altogether…any suggestions?
Yes, that is a big room, and it is wise to have divided it into zones as you have. If there are no places to sit in the TV sector from which you can clearly see the entryway, I’d suggest placing a mirror on the wall that reflects the doorway so you can see it while you’re watching TV. The key is to be able to fully relax, and part of relaxing is knowing what’s going on behind you and/or at the entryway. Does this advice make sense in your situation?
Yes, that does. I’m going to give it a try. Thanks for your input!
Great! So glad it helps. Please keep me posted — send a photo if you can 😉
Good day. I have a small studio apartment and dont know how to properly feng shui my home to get positive chi energy flowing. Is it possible for me to send you photographs of my space to get assistance on tips of how to accomplish good feng shui.
Hello Thelecia,
Please schedule a phone consultation with me – you can contact me directly via email at ann@openspacesfengshui.com. Thank you, I look forward to working with you.
I have my office and guy equipment (weights, teeadmill , bench press) in the same room. Its a very large room but is failing at both purposes of being a home office and gym. I also have a bird and tv in there. Feels like a mess, but i keep hoping to find a way to make it work.
Hello Dianna,
This sounds like an occasion for a mini-consultation as you are trying to use a single room for many purposes, and much in Feng Shui depends on what is happening in your life right now in addition to the layout of the room. Please let me know if you would like to set something up.
