How to Blend Coastal Style with Feng Shui in Your Beachside Home

If you seek harmony, owning a beachside property is a dream come true. It’s a chance to fall asleep to the sound of lapping waves, and wake up to the sun shining through white linen curtains as they gently float in the warm, salty breeze.

As idyllic as that sounds, to live in total beachside bliss you should also consider the principles of feng shui. Feng shui uses energy forces to harmonize you with your surroundings, in particular with regards to buildings.

Thankfully, coastal style goes hand in hand with this ancient Chinese practice. Literally translated, ‘feng’ means wind and ‘shui’ means water; elements you’ll find in abundance at the beach. In this article, we’ll look at some simple ways to combine serene coastal design with the principles of feng shui.

The Way of Water

In feng shui, water symbolizes wealth and prosperity. Its movement is believed to carry positive energy, called qi, throughout your home. You could set up a water feature like a fountain, aquarium, or even a small indoor waterfall in your living space.

The soothing sound of water will help connect your internal and external environment for a sense of balance. A great example of this indoor/outdoor vibe is the koi pond in the Contemporary Heritage Restoration by an architects Northern Beaches.

Go With the Flow

In general, go for curved lines and avoid sharp angles. Curves echo the flow of the sea and coastal elements like waves, shells, seaweed, and pebbles. When you’re shopping for furniture, look for rounded edges on items like mirrors, tables, or picture frames. This will soften the aesthetic and promote a smoother flow of qi.

Circular shapes are also in keeping with a nautical theme; think portholes, barometers, and old ship wheels. If you’re lucky enough to be building your own home, consider incorporating round windows or arched doorways. Circles allow qi to flow more freely in your home.

Coastal Colors

Colors are extremely significant in feng shui. They influence the energy and mood of a space. Think of a typical beach-chic color palette: sandy neutrals, blues, and whites. While these colors bring positive energy, they should be balanced with pops of brighter and warmer tones.

For example, green (a popular color in feng shui) is associated with health, hope, and new life. It also represents family in the bagua system, the feng shui energy map which splits your home into eight areas. If you have light walls in your living room, a vibrant green sofa is ideal.

Intentional Decor

Personal touches are crucial in feng shui because they carry your unique energy. Put your individual spin on things through artwork, plants, and other home decor. Hanging artwork on the northern side of a room (relating to career) will help bring success. Oceanscapes, fish, and water-related art does well here.

If  you have some beautiful driftwood you want to display, don’t put it in the southeast. This bottom right corner needs life, so opt for a thriving plant instead. Look for one with broad, healthy, green leaves, like a Chinese jade

Create Your Feng Shui Sanctuary

Developing your beach getaway with feng shui principles in mind will help you connect with nature, find peace, and encourage prosperity. Embrace the elements, design and decorate mindfully, and you’ll have the perfect sanctuary for you and your family.
